There are a few Wing Commander games, but this game differs from the others because it is more open-ended. The game was released in 1993, which is why the game is not truly open world, but it is about as close as games from the early nineties ever got to open world. With Wing Commander : Privateer, you may choose the life of a privateer and set off into the starlight sky to make your fortune.

Pick a route and build your own path to success

In the Wing Commander : Privateer Universe there are pirates, mercenaries, miners, cutthroats, and Kilrathi. You have to deal with all of them while taking your chosen path towards success. You may choose to be a mercenary, a merchant or a pirate. Trade, explore and go on adventures to different planets and bases. The graphics are very poor by today’s standards, but they were top of the line in 1993. Modify your ship according to your budget to help you in your chosen career path.

Many players have played until they can upgrade no longer

Even if you complete the main mission, you may continue trading, fighting and upgrading. If you finish your main mission, you may continue upgrading your ship until there are no more upgrades left, at which point you will be unstoppable. Some people used this game as a gateway that helped introduce them to the rest of the Wing Commander franchise. Wing Commander : Privateer is a fine game for nostalgic gamers and fans of the old Wing Commander games.
